Choosing a school lab coat: fabric, fit and details

Sizing is the most common mistake. Students grow quickly between Form 1 and Form 4, so we suggest measuring at the time of ordering and allowing room across the shoulders. A coat that is too tight pulls at the arms. One that is too loose can catch on benches and burners.

Name embroidery and school branding on lab coats

Lab coats look alike, so labelling matters. Most schools choose one of three options.

• School name embroidered on the chest pocket, so coats are clearly school property.
• Student name embroidered below the school name, which makes it easier to return lost coats and to store them centrally between practicals.
• A small class or house marking on the sleeve, useful where several streams share one lab.

How schools order lab coats in bulk

Schools usually have two moments to order: when Form 1 joins, and when stock needs replacing at the start of the year. A bursar or science head can make the process smoother by preparing a few things in advance.

1. Count students taking science practicals by class, with an approximate size split.
2. Decide whether the coat is mandatory, or optional for those who want one.
3. Choose plain or embroidered, and whether student names are needed.
4. Send the information to us on WhatsApp or visit the shop.
5. Review the itemised quote, approve a sample if you want to, then confirm.

Caring for lab coats so they last

• Wash coats separately from coloured uniform, because chemical stains can spread.
• Rinse any chemical spill straight away, and do not bleach unless the school has confirmed the finish allows it.
• Iron on a medium setting, and not directly on embroidery.
• Collect coats at the end of term, check buttons and cuffs, and replace worn ones before the next term starts.

Schools that keep a small spare stock for visitors and new admissions spend less time chasing missing coats. Keep a list of sizes in stock, and re-order only what is short.
